Introduction

Dragging yourself to the gym and exercising could seem dreadful to some people. I was one of those individuals.

I had the motivation to exercise to improve my physical health, but I couldn’t find myself consistently in the gym for a couple of weeks. I followed a cycle of consistently exercising followed by periods where I do the opposite because I do not feel like it.

We all have those times when we do not show up because we do not feel like it.

Becoming aware of this issue, I decided to tackle it by modifying my routine and changing my mindset. And in weeks, I found myself exercising and pushing myself at the gym, even when I did not feel like it.

I was even having fun showing to the gym and pushing my physical limits.

This article will list ways I turned my fitness journey into a fun, exciting journey. After you read this article, I hope you will consider implementing at least one of my ways to help make your fitness journey more exciting.

#1. I Tracked My Progress

You will not enjoy the process and not get far into your journey if you do not visually track your progress.

After my workouts, I write down in my notes app what exercises I performed and how many sets and reps for those workouts. This not only helps me keep organized but also boosts my motivation.

When I see visible progress in how many reps I do, or how much weight I lift, I am motivated to keep that growth going.

Also, I take progress photos once in a while (every couple of months), which reminds me how far I am in my journey and motivates me to trust the process.

#2. Modifying Exercises

One of the reasons I end up not showing up at the gym is that I kept doing the same old exercises since I began working out.

Let’s say I have been doing weighted barbell rows at every upper-body workout for several weeks, I am going to get sick of doing them. Many other exercises target the same muscle group: pull-ups, lat-pulldowns, and cable rows. etc.

Switching it up once in a while helped make me look forward to exercising.

#3. High-Intensity Workouts

I am going to say this right now, I am not a fan of long enduring workouts.

If you want to give yourself a challenge but limited time, then high-intensity workouts are for you.

These types of workouts are the most fun for me. They consist of very challenging exercises followed by immediate rest. For example, on Mondays, I perform high-intensity intervals of jumping and skipping followed by a minute rest for 20 minutes.

After a high-intensity workout, I feel accomplished.

#4. Followed a Consistent Routine

This is the most significant step if you want to make working out a hobby.

If you implement all the practices mentioned in this article but do not consistently work out, you are wasting your time. Turning your workout routine into something fun requires you to make it a habit, and habits must repeat over time for them to stick.

I would say it took me several weeks, even months, for me to transform my fitness journey into a strong habit.

#5. I Labeled Myself An Athlete

When making your exercise routines a hobby, changing your mindset is crucial, similar to modifying your practices.

When I labeled myself as someone who enjoys challenging myself (an athlete), my fitness journey transformed

Instead of finding the process dreadful, I found it exciting. I pushed myself to the gym, especially when I did not feel like it, which made everything else fun.

It does not matter if you are already an athlete or not athletic whatsoever; this mind shift works for anyone wishing to level up in their fitness journey.

Conclusion

Working out does not have to be a dreadful experience. Simply implementing these practices into your routine could assist you in transforming your fitness into something exciting.
